Happy 35th Birthday!

That’s right, one of the greatest horror films of all time just celebrated its 35th birthday with a big reunion event in England!

“Here’s Johnny!”

Yes, that line was ad-libbed, but that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to trivia about “The Shining”, Director Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece…

The film just celebrated its 35th birthday, and Warner Brothers did a really cool thing: they reunited many of the film’s participants for a huge anniversary event in England.

Here’s how it was reported in The Hollywood Reporter: “To celebrate the 35th anniversary of “Here’s Johnny” becoming one of cinema’s most iconic lines, the crew and even some of the cast from The Shining assembled at Elstree Studios, the famed U.K. facility where much of Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed psychological horror was shot in 1979.

Arranged by Warner Bros and The Elstree Project, a local program aimed maintaining the studios heritage, the group later attended a special screening of the film in the Odyssey Cinema in St. Albans, the nearby town outside London where Kubrick lived for 20 years until his death in 1999.”

Here is how the event was described by Garrett Brown, the man who invented the Steadi-cam…

“Seeing this crowd again, it’s like a room full of ghosts, but very gentle good ghosts.”

Identical twins Louise and Lisa Burns were also present. The girls memorably played the Grady Twins in the film – they were just ten years old when the film was made – and they appeared in many different – and gruesome – scenes.

“It’s so lovely to be with the whole gang again,” said Lisa, who shared a funny story about Steadi-cam operator Garrett Brown. “Mummy wouldn’t let us have a cup of coffee and a donut each, just half a cup and half a donut. But he used to go around and get us an extra cup and a donut. It was like being part of a big family.”

“The Shining” Exposed!

I have posted about filmmaker Rodney Ascher’s 2012 film called “Room 237″, a documentary that highlights many conspiracy theories about “The Shining.”

My favorite is this: the knitted Apollo 11 sweater worn by Danny Torrence and the particular design of the carpet was Kubrick’s apology for having supposedly shot the 1969 moon landings – a huge “fake” lunar landing to coverup the fact that we never went to the moon!

“The Shining” Executive Producer Jan Harlan laughs off all of the conspiracies. She sums up the film simply:

“It’s a ghost film, end of story. It’s completely mysterious. When at the end you see Jack Nicholson in the photograph in 1923, you can’t ask ‘how come?’, because nobody can possibly have an answer. Kubrick always said ‘never try to explain something that you don’t understand yourself.'”

According to THR: “Kubrick’s daughter Katherina said that during the shoot she had asked her dad if he believed in ghosts. “He said no but wouldn’t it be nice if there were because that would mean it wasn’t the end.”

Danny Lloyd, who was just six years old when he played Danny Torrance, greeted the audience via videotape, and spoke about his life after “The Shining”.

“I know that I’ve kept a low profile, and I know people say that’s because I didn’t like the movie or didn’t like the process of making the movie, but that’s definitely not true,” he said. “So I want to set the record straight and say that I really enjoyed the experience and the crew was like my family.”

Lloyd is now a father of four, and he teaches at a community college in Kentucky, where he has a small farm.

According to THR, “Lloyd finished the video with his child Ben ride a bike around the house, much like he himself had done in the Overlook Hotel, built in Elstree Studios, 35 years earlier!”

Time To Take A Peek Through A Dirty Peephole!

Sometimes you know EXACTLY what a movie is just by looking at the poster…I have an example for you: does ANYONE wonder what THIS film is all about?

Thanks to the wonders of cinema, there is a “nature camp” on the moon! And it looks like quite the party! I can only imagine the cinematic experience that awaits me on that outer space trip! And how about this “very close family!”

“Sex Was Her Master! Lust Was Her Destiny!”

Yes, I know it’s wrong, but who wouldn’t want to at least find out what was going on in this film? For a time in our country’s cinematic history, it exemplified a type of movie that – for a very select audience – was SO SO RIGHT! Time to peep into an era in movie history when the posters were just about the dirtiest part of the film!

“Keyholes Are For Peeping!”

Let’s go back to the “grind house” era – when films were screened in dingy theaters that catered to “lonely, adventurous men”…because these were made for one reason only: to get a single man’s attention!

The posters were designed to tempt frustrated bachelors with illicit shenanigans that would open their eyes and excite their imaginations!

This World Lives Online!

There are SO many classic sexploitation films from the 60’s and 70’s, it’s impossible to know them all…but there are now people here to help – thanks to the internet!

For example, I missed out on this gem – until “Goregirlsdungeon” helped me discover it!

Three young girls must avenge the death of their mother, who was a spy, in order to collect a $3-million inheritance – there’s your plot, enjoy it! It was also directed by Doris Wishman, and was an indirect sequel to her classic Chesty Morgan flicks “Deadly Weapons” and “Double Agent 73″.

By 1986, it seems that Lloyd had latched onto a great idea: crazy “over the top” movie titles, and lots of crazy actors acting crazy, tearing off limbs, and going topless, all with a punk rock soundtrack!

The pupils at a high school next to a nuclear power plant start acting and looking strange after buying contaminated drugs from a plant worker. That’s it, a simple plot upon which to hang anarchy in all its forms!

And speaking of anarchy…

All The Love You Cannes! 2002. Full disclosure: I am in this movie. I am. It might be a single b-roll shot while Lloyd mentions me in passing, but hey, I’m a Troma star!

Here we all are in Cannes one year: E! News Host Steve Kmetko, who allowed my wife Alex, along with James Gunn, turn him into “Dolphinman” for “Sex On The Riviera”. Lloyd is on the left, by the way…

Every year I was in Cannes, Lloyd and his Troma team were up for any shenanigans…and their tireless energy is captured in Lloyd’s documentary about life at the Cannes film festival. If you want to see the best documentary about the pomp, circumstance, and sordid underbelly that is Cannes, this is the movie for you!

The Troma Team is willing to try every stunt imaginable to get a little publicity, including walking the streets of Cannes dressed as various Troma heroes, staging lesbian make-out sessions, hilariously crashing Jean-Claude Van Damme’s “press conference,” where JCVD shows up for about 2 seconds.

It’s a great, inside look at the film festival, and includes great stuff with James Gunn, who went on to fame and fortune as Director and visionary behind “Guardians Of The Galaxy!”

Of course, Troma may be best known for the world’s first superhero from New Jersey!

THE TOXIC AVENGER QUADRILOGY! Forget Alien: THIS is the Quadrilogy you need to own! Lloyd created New Jersey’s first Superhero, and 4 films into the story, it just keeps getting better…

Here is the IMDB summary of “The Toxic Avenger”: “This is the story of Melvin, the Tromaville Health Club mop boy, who inadvertently and naively trusts the hedonistic, contemptuous and vain health club members, to the point of accidentally ending up in a vat of toxic waste. The devastating results then have a transmogrification effect, his alter ego is released, and the Toxic Avenger is born, to deadly and comical results. The local mop boy is now the local Superhero, the saviour of corruption, thuggish bullies and indifference. Troma classic with good make-up effects and stunts, a pleasant surprise indeed.”

“Citizen Toxie” is the fourth in the series, and included “Hank The Angry Drunk Dwarf” as GOD – but of course it did. The DVD also includes a full-length documentary on the making of the movie, and a ton of deleted scenes.

In 2006 a novelization of The Toxic Avenger was released. It was co-written by Kaufman and long time Troma employee Adam Jahnke. “The Toxic Avenger” is the movie that is most often mentioned when discussing Troma, but there is one that must be remembered as, I truly believe, a masterpiece of creativity…

Tromeo & Juliet. Behold the most Tromatic masterpiece of all. This was written by James Gunn, Directed by Lloyd, and truly stands as a masterwork. As Variety said, “Shakespeare is transformed into a NO-HOLDS BARD!”

As the poster says so beautifully: “BODY PIERCING. KINKY SEX. DISMEMBERMENT. THE THINGS THAT MADE SHAKESPEARE GREAT!”

When I was in Cannes, my wife Alex was interviewing Kennth Branagh for his 4-hour opus “Hamlet.” She told him he wasn’t the only Shakespeare film in Cannes, and showed him the “Tromeo & Juliet” poster. He read the words above in his classic British accent, then added, “perhaps I can get my soundtrack done by the ASS PONYS!”

Here Is “The Burning Man”!

And Now, Meet “The Wicker Man!”

Hmmm….I see a bit of a resemblance…first, a quick primer on what “Burning Man” is…

Behold “The Burning Man!”

According to wikipedia, “the annual event known as “Burning Man” began as a bonfire ritual on the summer solstice in 1986 when Larry Harvey, Jerry James, and a few friends met on Baker Beach in San Francisco and burned a 9-foot wooden man as well as a smaller wooden dog. Harvey has described his inspiration for burning these effigies as a spontaneous act of ‘radical self-expression’.”

This annual event is hugely popular, and combines unique artistic expression with one really big bonfire…and speaking of bonfires:

Here is perhaps the inspiration for “Burning Man”, although this image is steeped with supernatural horror….as one of the participants says:

“Do sit down, Sergeant. Shocks are so much better absorbed with the knees bent.”

The Wicker Man!

One of the most unique horror films of the 1970’s came from England, where acclaimed Writer Anthony Shaffer unveiled the story of a young girl’s disappearance, and one Detective’s efforts to find her…

“FLESH TO TOUCH! FLESH TO BURN! DON’T KEEP THE WICKER MAN WAITING!”

There are times when words simply cannot describe the “power of strange” – this cult classic is simply one of the strangest films ever made – and spawned possibly the worst remake of all time!

First, here is the trailer for the original:

Police Sergeant Howie, played by Edward Woodward, is called to an island village in search of a missing girl whom the locals claim never existed. While conducting his investigation, he uncovers so much more…

Veteran horror film Actor Christopher Lee is Lord Summerisle, and as always, Lee is in top form as the leader of this stage island…

Britt Ekland was immediately launched into movie infamy as Willow…a “free spirit” who performs one of the strangest and yes, “most naked” dances in movie history…

Britt Or No Britt?

While the Actress achieved notoriety for the naked dance, it was revealed later that the nude scene was a body double…but the dancing is all her…according to IMDB, “a body double was secretly used for the naked rear shots of Willow dancing. The scenes were filmed after Britt Ekland had left the set. The body double was used because Ekland would only agree to topless shots of her body. After shooting was over, not only was Ekland furious to learn she had been doubled in some shots but that she was also a few weeks pregnant in that scene. Director Robin Hardy says it was Ekland herself who did not want her bottom to be filmed, as she did not like it.”

“The Wicker Man” is widely regarded as one of the best horror films ever made. Not bad for a film that was disowned by its makers on release. There is a great blu-ray release that offers a “Director’s Cut” of the film along with a ton of great extras!

Sergeant Howie: Your lordship seems strangely… unconcerned.
Lord Summerisle: Well I’m confident your suspicions are wrong, Sergeant. We don’t commit murder here. We’re a deeply religious people.
Sergeant Howie: Religious? With ruined churches, no ministers, no priests… and children dancing naked!
Lord Summerisle: They do love their divinity lessons.
Sergeant Howie: [outraged] But they are… a-are NAKED!
Lord Summerisle: Naturally! It’s much too dangerous to jump through fire with their clothes on!

The Movie’s Shocking Finale!

If you want to know how this film ties into “Burning Man”, it’s in the shocking finale:

Lord Summerisle: Do sit down, Sergeant. Shocks are so much better absorbed with the knees bent.

And shocks are what you get when the secret of “The Wicker Man” is revealed:

Of course, as with every cult film, a remake was inevitable…but leave it to Nicolas Cage to make it one of the worst films of all time!

A remake with Nicolas Cage was directed by Neil LaBute – and they misjudged every single aspect of the film…which is worth seeing only because of how ill-conceived it is… seek out the original instead – it is a trip that few filmmakers take any longer.

Chuck Norris! Charles Bronson! Superman!

I love movie history – and here is one of the most fascinating movie documentaries that celebrates the wacky 80’s movie company known as Cannon films!

Time For Some “Electric Boogaloo!”

The new documentary is called “Electric Boogaloo”, and it’s a terrific in-depth look at Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus – two movie-obsessed cousins who launched a film company in the late 70’s that released some of the best B-movies of all time, such as:

“Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo!”

That’s right, the breakdance sensation of the early 80’s “Breakin'” had a sequel with one of cinema’s most ridiculous titles of all time – and of course, it was a Cannon film! Check out the trailer for this new documentary:

Time For Some Cannon Classics!

Cannon Films was known for such b-movie classics as “Enter the Ninja”, “Death Wish 2″ and the legendary Chuck Norris action film “Invasion USA!”

Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus started Cannon films in 1979, and in the 80’s offered up a never-ending array of low-budget exploitation films and star-studded action movies like Sylvester Stallone’s arm wrestling epic “Over The Top!”

JCVD! JCVD!

The cousins loved action films, which were popular all over the world, so they churned out a lot of them, working with Stallone, Chuck Norris as well as Jean-Claude Van Damme!

The documentary is full of clips from movies such as “Bloodsport” along with interviews with Molly Ringwald, Alex Winter and Dolph Lundgren, who starred in “Masters Of The Universe!”

Golan and Globus were high flyers at the Cannes film festival every year – and legend has it they once signed a deal to do a film on a cocktail napkin at the Carlton Hotel!

Director Mark Hartley has done a great job bringing this story to life…capturing the “anything goes” era of 80’s filmmaking – Cannon never made critically-acclaimed movies, but that wasn’t their goal, and a lot of these movies are still cult hits today!

Probably one of the most fascinating stories about Cannon involves America’s favorite super hero: and how Golan and Globus managed to get the rights to make a fourth “Superman” movie with Christopher Reeve!

There are so many great stories to share and campy movies to celebrate, all thanks to the renegade movie company known as Cannon!

Celebrate One Of Hollywood’s Iconic Sex Kittens!

Mamie Van Doren is a Hollywood survivor. She is also one of the town’s most legendary sex kittens, and here’s why!

There have been a number of Hollywood sex kittens over the years: many have become legendary, like Marilyn Monroe:

And there are a number of legendary tinseltown sex symbols who have survived to carve out lucrative careers, like Ann-Margret and this smart businesswoman:

“Untamed” Mamie Van Doren!

Van Doren has been in a number of classic cult movies, and is perhaps best remembered for bringing the rock ‘n’ roll-style of music alive in the B-musical “Untamed Youth” (1957)!

Here is the classic trailer – and tell me they didn’t know what they were selling when they used the word “throbbing!”

Some of Van Doren’s more noteworthy movies include “Teacher’s Pet”, “Born Reckless”, “High School Confidential” and “The Beat Generation”!

But Van Doren was just as well known for her provocative roles, in a classic series of “sex kitten” performances that made her every man’s fantasy.

“Girls Who Grow Up Too Fast!”

Yes, that is the provocative headline in the trailer for “Girls Town” from 1959, which provoked censors with a shower scene where audiences could see Van Doren’s naked back! Here is the trailer:

Look at the words on that poster! This 1960 film cemented Van Doren’s reputation as a “girl gone wild!”

“Fun With The Student Body!”

This was a time when Hollywood was trying to “spice up” the movies without running afoul of stringent censorship laws…and a beautiful, aggressive woman was just the ticket…

The Sex Kitten Years!

Van Doren used her popularity to branch out into other areas as well, including being one of the most popular pin-up models of the 60’s:

As the sexual revolution raged at the end of the 60’s, actresses like Van Doren took full advantage by appearing in a number of men’s magazines…

She posed twice for Playboy in 1963 to promote her movie “3 Nuts in Search of a Bolt”, and became a legend with this quote:

“I don’t even want to say double-D, because they’re even bigger than that.”

Because it’s a musical – and because it stars the imcomparable Village People, there are a variety of wildly over the top musical sequences!

In fact, “Village People” member David Hodo was the Construction Worker in the group, and he gets a big solo number, “I Love You to Death”. Hodo jumps around in his skintight jeans, while being clawed at by overly-made-up mannequins in Halston knock-offs!

And did I mention Steve Guttenberg?

For reasons you will only be able to understand when you see the film, here he is with Actress Valerie Perrine trying to take Bruce Jenner’s pants off:

No matter how you feel about Caitlin Jenner, and let’s be honest – who cares how someone lives their life – remember this: you DO have a say over the type of movie you choose to star in!

Not sure what Bruce was thinking, but THIS is the real scandal!

You all know that I am fascinated by an era of filmmaking when movie posters were full of innuendo and suggestion –

JUST LOOK AT WHAT THIS POSTER SAID!

Yes, this is going to be one clean motel! The classic poster for “The Bed And How To Make It” was a pure marketing “come on”, and here are some more GREAT examples of the era! Let’s return to a time of suggestive posters and “not-very-subtle” dialogue like:

“Don’t bite! Pain hurts.”

Yes, there was definitely some “agony” in this love. In an era of “Fifty Shades Of Grey”, let’s look at a time when “sin was simpler”: checkout the poster for the story of a bored housewife and her “temptations!”

Yes, a restless, bored housewife rents an apartment where she indulges in all of her sexual fantasies. Now, since this was the late 60’s, those temptations almost ALWAYS took place off-camera, but her “temptation” was enough to fill grind house theaters with lonely men all across the country!

Exploitation Sex Symbol Pat Barrington!

Legendary sex kitten Pat Barrington stars as a housewife who has an itch she cannot scratch:

And the film includes this classic line, which could have come straight from “Fifty Shades Of Grey”:

“Don’t bite! Pain hurts.”

This was a time when films promised so much more than they ever delivered, which meant the movie posters were hilariously titillating!

Although it suggests much much more, the star of this film actually “makes the beds” in the movie – as a housekeeper!

The poster was clearly promising a lot of “action” in the film, and there is some “boundary pushing” simulated sex and nudity, but this mostly just a classic 60’s sexploitation romp…

The folks at Something Weird have done a great job of keeping these obscure films alive for future generations to study and enjoy! Also, a big kudos to Severin Films as well, a home video company that is also working hard to keep classics like this alive:

“Vampyros Lesbos” and “She Killed In Ecstasy” are amazing new Severin blu-ray releases – with newly remastered versions, lots of extras, and real insight into what makes these films worth preserving! Read all about them here:

Ready For Some Obscure Cult Horror?

If you are a cult film lover, you can’t help but admire when a film maker creates a unique vision – especially on a low low budget.

Here’s a very imaginative horror film that was made for almost nothing!

This Norwegian horror film finds a way to be very imaginative on almost no budget. Here is the plot, courtesy of IMDB:

Norwegian folklore turns out to be real when Leo and Elvis encounter “Thale” in a basement. A regular cleaning job turns into a struggle for survival, while they’re trying to figure out what or who “Thale” is.

A 10K Movie!

Reports say that “Thale” was shot on a budget of just $10,000! And here is one reason why: Director Aleksander L. Nordaas was also the film’s writer, co-producer, cinematographer, editor, and set designer! He also built the sets and shot most of the film in his father’s basement!

The film’s reviews were mixed, but I am here to celebrate the ingenuity and creative drive that was behind it..a real labor of love, and worth supporting for that reason…now, this next guy doesn’t need any help at all with his self-confidence:

Meet “The Troll Hunter!”

This Norwegian film is also based on a fairy tale – the story of the monstrous trolls that live in Norway’s wilderness! Check out the trailer:

“Have you ever had fantasies of saving a tribe?”

It’s the stuff of horror legend: eager young environmentalists go into the Amazon with the best intentions: to save noble tribes…but things never go as planned, do they?

Director Eli Roth is back with a wild, shocking film that pays homage to one of the most controversial movies ever made!

Here is the trailer for Eli Roth’s new film “The Green Inferno”:

This is going to be one shocking trip up river! It’s the story of young activists who travel deep into the Amazon to save the rain forest…

This is going to be extreme horror from a Master of the genre, and Roth is leaning on some of the most shocking influences in film. Here is some great behind-the-scenes info on the movie.

Director Roth filmed “The Green Inferno” in an Amazonian village with no electricity or running water, only accessible by motorboat. The village was so remote the natives had never before seen a movie or television.

To get permission to film with them, Roth’s producers brought a generator, television and DVD player in order to show the tribe what a movie was!

And What Did Roth Show Them? Home Movies!

Eli Roth is known for “Cabin Fever” and “Hostel” – aggressively shocking films – so what does he show these tribal folks? How about a film that shows them as savage cannibals! Yes, Roth showed them “Cannibal Holocaust!”

More on this shocking film in a moment. According to the great website IMDB, when Roth shows them the movie – the first film they EVER saw – the natives thought it was a comedy and agreed to let Roth and crew film there. Nearly the entire village signed up after the screening to play cannibals!

“The Green Inferno” was filmed in some of the most remote locations in the world.
All of the cast agreed to get yellow fever vaccinations before filming, and agree to make the film in the deepest amazonian jungle, surrounded by tarantulas, snakes, and venomous frogs!

Eli’s “Cannibal” Homage!

The plot of “Green Inferno” is heavily influxes by 1980’s “Cannibal Holocaust”…

According to IMDB: “in addition to being one of Eli Roth’s favorite horror films and one that inspired his directing career, “The Green Inferno” was actually the working title that Director Ruggero Deodato used when he was making that movie; it was changed to something more bluntly descriptive and shocking (particularly with the use of the word “Holocaust”).”

“The Most Controversial Film Of All Time!”

WARNING! THIS FILM IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!

If you do not know about “Cannibal Holocaust”, maybe you should stop right here. It is known as the most controversial film ever released, and there are good reasons for it!

The plot is simple: A New York University professor returns from a rescue mission to the Amazon rainforest with the footage shot by a lost team of documentarians who were making a film about the area’s local cannibal tribes.

WARNING! The trailer is somewhat graphic!

Yes, “Cannibal Holocaust” is one of the first “found film” movies ever released! The shocking aspect of the film begins with this Professor finding footage showing what happened to a film crew that disappears in the Amazon.

It’s difficult to shown most of the images from the film, it is just that shocking. But it is also a film that has been rescued from infamy with a new blu-ray release that puts the movie in context.

I am not going to show the front cover of the blu-ray release, as the imagery is just too shocking – and that led to a fascinating story at the time of the film’s release in Italy:

Here is how IMDB describes what happened:

“Ten days after its premiere in Milan, the film was seized by the Italian courts, and director Ruggero Deodato was arrested and charged with obscenity. He was later charged with murdering several actors on camera, and faced life in prison. The cast had signed contracts requiring them to disappear for a year after shooting, to maintain the illusion that they’d died. Deodato contacted Luca Barbareschi and told him to contact the three other actors who played the missing film team. When the actors appeared in court, alive and well, the murder charges were dropped!”

That’s right, he had to bring the movie’s cast into court to prove he hadn’t killed them on camera!

Whether you ever want to see this film, or likely NOT – you have to understand the role that “Cannibal Holocaust” played in horror film history, and why Eli Roth is paying homage to it!

And here is the best fact of all:

“In actuality, there are no cannibalistic tribes in the Amazon!”

“The Green Inferno” will speak to horror aficionados who are willing to go to the edge of the cinematic cliff: films that are shocking and NOT for everyone…

Are You In A “Sad Clown” Movie Mood?

Well, time to cinematically cheer up and enjoy some of this!

Time For A “Happy Blue Face!”

Someone asked me recently who were the most interesting – or WORST – Directors of all time! Well, here is one of each! You will be “fascinated” by this!

If you’ve never heard of French Director Jean Rollin, you have missed out on some very atmospheric, haunting, nudity and blood-filled – yet somewhat slow-moving – European art-film horror!

Meet Jean Rollin!

Jean Rollin was a French film director, actor, and novelist – best known for his films in the “fantastique” genre, as they say in France. He specialized in atmospheric horror of the 70’s – when relaxed censorship rules in cinema allowed Directors to push the envelope!

Jean Rollin’s are very interesting to watch: moody, atmospheric and did I mention that his films were filled with BLOOD!

Jean Rollin’s Cult “Artsploitation” Is “Redeemed”!

Thanks to the terrific “Redemption” series of releases – from the “Redemption Films” group – these movies are now available again – and gives each film a newly remastered look, plus tons of extras like documentaries, audio commentaries and trailers – a terrific job.

Requiem For A Vampire

Here is an early classic: on the run from a reform school, two young women commit crimes dressed as clowns.

Yes, they commit crimes dressed as clowns. How can you argue with that? Here is the clown-filled trailer:

Of course, the two “fleeing female clowns” seek refuge in a haunted castle, and end up trapped with no escape!

Because, as happens too often, this haunted castle is ruled by a hoard of sexy, blood-crazed vampires and their leader, an evil immortal creature who is the last of his kind.

Another of Rollins films is this classic:

Fascination!

Considered by many to be his masterpiece, “FASCINATION” follows a swaggering thief who hides out in a lavish chateau, holding the female occupants at gunpoint.

You can sense a trend here: Rollin’s films usually involve women who are kidnapped or held against their will – and who wreck revenge against their abductors – usually men. And they always end up in a deserted castle.

Women With A Thirst For Blood!

When night falls, the “Fascination” captor realizes that these two maids are not only deadlier than he imagined, but are gatekeepers to a ring of women with a thirst for blood.

Once again, the film is filled with hynotic imagery like this:

And what I think is his most dynamic image ever captured in one of his films – the blonde on the bridge with the sickle…

This action sequence, while fairly slow moving – it is, as you know, Jean Rollin – this sequence is beautifully done and hypnotic…

The Living Dead Girl

This is one of his last films. Here is the trailer:

“The Living Dead Girl” is a melancholy, moody bloodfest – it is certainly Rollin’s bloodiest film…

Director Jean Rollin died in 2010, but all of these releases have extensive material with him, as he actively participated in these great remasters. He introduces some of the films, takes part in commentaries, and discusses his work with passion and pride.

Now, you also asked about the worst Director of all time – which I think is unfair, since anyone who makes a movie deserves credit – even this guy!

Grindhouse Lives!

Meet Andy Milligan, who may just be Staten Island’s greatest filmmaker! Here are some example of his “masterpieces”!

These are films that you can savor over and over again, especially when they include dialogue like THIS:

Dusty Cole: How’s your mother?
Cherry Lane: She threw me out. I guess she got tired of me using all her hairspray.

Shooting on budgets that hovered around $10,000, Milligan turned out 29 movies between 1965 and 1988 – moves that were

“In Dripping Blood Color!”

While the posters were classic grindhouse “come ons”, his movies were appallingly shot, often ludicrously plotted shock films – but that’s what played in 42nd Street grind houses, drive-ins and avant-garde film festivals in the late 60’s and 70’s…

Milligan churned out film after film, with some of exploitation’s greatest movies titles!

Torture Dungeon! (1969)
Bloodthirsty Butchers! (1970)
The Body Beneath! (1970)
Guru, the Mad Monk! (1970)
The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! (1972)

“EXPLICIT BEYOND BELIEF!”

And they weren’t just horror films – no, Milligan knew how to sex it up as well!

Fleshpot On 42nd St. “Erotic, Sensual and Smoldering!”

That’s right, they weren’t all horror films, Milligan also loved deviant sex – and blew the lid of 42nd Street’s sleazy sex trade!

The plot was simple: A street whore desperately seeks love and acceptance against the backdrop of the criminal element of early 1970s Times Square.

The film featured classic Milligan dialogue like this:

Cherry Lane: Didn’t your mother ever tell you that you shouldn’t go out with strange men?
Dusty Cole: Bob’s not strange. He’s dull.

Wel, enough sex, let’s get back to what Milligan REALLY liked – movies that he filmed:

“In Cranium-Cleaving Color!”

How can you resist a movie that offers this tagline!

The Ghastly Ones!

You are seeing a trend: classic grindhouse poster art – sex, violence, SHOCKS BEYOND BELIEF! – c’mon in suckers, the water’s fine!

First, check out the “Doctor’s Warning” on the poster – a classic “come on” for the suckers at that time…love it! Now, back to “The Ghastly Ones” plot: Three married couples are forced to spend the night in a Victorian-era house where they start getting killed off by a deranged psycho who’s bent on claiming an inheritance they are all entitled to.

Here’s a great bit of trivia, thanks to IMDB: In several of the fight scenes of the film, the crew and their cameras and sound equipment are visible. There are also moments when the director can be heard softly reminding the actors of their lines.

Now THAT”S film making! Here’s another example of Milligan’s madness:

The Body Beneath!

In this movie, Milligan captures the eerie horror of-, ah who’s kidding who? Do you REALLY care what it’s about? It’s slow-moving and laughably bad in a dementedly fun way! I mean, you have to watch it in order to find out why these women look like THIS!

There is so much more on Andy Milligan to share, including a book that tells the hilarious, and ultimately sad story of an awful filmmaker who managed to make a number of movies that are still being enjoyed today!

You would look concerned too if you starred in a movie with that tagline! But did you know it led to the complete disappearance of the star of the film?

Warning! NOT For The Faint Of Heart!

You don’t know the half of it! Imagine you landed the starring role – opposite THIS GUY!

Sometimes there are movies that are so wrong – I mean WRONG – in every way that they are destined for cult status….with that in mind, time to explore the mysterious disappearance of the sex kitten star of this film:

Yes, there is a film called “The Sinful Dwarf”, and it is everything the title suggests! Not only that, it starred a beautiful young Actress who would never be hear from again!

Meet Anne Sparrow!

Actress Anne Sparrow stars in “The Sinful Dwarf”, but it’s her only film performance EVER, and she has disappeared into the black hole of movie trivia! Why? Well, let’s begin with this – a trailer that only hints at the decadence on display:

Here’s the plot of “The Sinful Dwarf”:

Anne Sparrow stars as the young wife of a Doctor who needs to rent a room for a few nights in a strange city. Diminutive former kiddie-show host Torben Bille – who looks disturbingly like Jack Black in a trash compactor – stars as well, as a young man who takes a special interest in the female guests at his mother’s boarding house…

Poor Anne Sparrow!

For Actress Anne Sparrow, it must have been a dream come true: landing a starring role in your first feature film! But who is kidding who – just look at this description from the cover art:

“The delicious Anne Sparrow – in her first and understandably only screen role – co-stars in this towering achievement in graphic depravity, now fully restored from a 35mm print discovered hidden in a janitor’s closet at the Danish Film Institute!”

I guess being part of a film described as a “towering achievement in graphic depravity” can make you second-guess your career choice!

Anne Sparrow certainly had a good reason NEVER TO ACT AGAIN – in classic euro-sleaze style, the movie plot has her abducted early in on the film and abused by our Sinful Dwarf for the rest of the film’s running time – while her husband naively keeps looking for a job…

Oh, did I mention that the “Sinful Dwarf” has a CRAZY Mom – and yes, she SINGS in the film exactly the way she looks! Happy Mother’s Day indeed! You will never clean your ears the same way again…

And yes, that’s right – this movie was not only found in a janitor’s closet in Denmark – but they chose not to throw it out!

In the film, Actress Sparrow is abducted by the “Sinful Dwarf” and finds herself chained to a wall – with her “acting” comprising mostly of yelling and screaming while barely dressed…

The “Missing” Sex Kitten!

As you all know, the internet holds the answers to our entire history….it can tell you anything and everything – except what happened to Sparrow!

I have scoured the internet and haven’t found anything about Anne Sparrow – except that “The Sinful Dwarf” was her first and only movie – perhaps it was due to the fact that the Producers took the film, added some “XXX” material in it, and released an even dirtier version!

The movie makes Anne Sparrow’s performance look even more graphic than it was, but whatever the reason, Anne Sparrow’s singular movie achievement remains this – one of the craziest examples of “Euro-Sleaze” ever released!

“Hands” Off This Cinematic Masterpiece!

If you LOVE bad movies as much as I do, then “Hands” down I have a winner for you!
It’s a legendary film shot in 1966 that is now available on blu-ray – called the single worst film ever made!

“Manos: The Hands Of Fate”

“Manos: The Hands of Fate” was made in 1966 – and here is the beginning of a trend: it was written, directed, produced by, and starring Harold P. Warren!

Yes, Warren was the visionary behind it all!

Here is a very short trailer that only hints at the horror that awaits!

Meet “Torgo!”

Here is the plot of “Manos”: a family gets lost on the road and stumbles upon a hidden, underground, devil-worshiping cult led by the fearsome Master and his servant Torgo – yes, TORGO!

What’s funny to me is that “Torgo” looks like a guy who stumbled out of a Gunsmoke saloon!

According to the great website IMDB: the entire film was shot with a hand-held camera that could only record 32 seconds of film at a time. It was also shot without sound; all the lines were dubbed later by two men and one woman. Jackey Neyman cried when she first heard her dubbed voice.

Even The Film’s Title Is Inept!

Here’s a wacky fact: “Manos” is the Spanish word for “hands”. So in the other words, the title of this movie is

“Hands: The Hands of Fate!”

When you read the “DVD Drive-In” review, they say this:

Reaching new highs (or is it lows?) in ineptitude, the independently-made regional schlocker MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE has by and large become many a filmgoer’s premium choice as the worst movie ever made (though my vote still goes to MONSTER A-GO GO).

Well, I must differ…first, look at this great double feature DVD from Something Weird video:

Yes, I proudly own “Monster A Go Go”, and yes, it is jawdroppingly inept…but NOTHING compared to the co-feature:

Psyched By The 4D Witch!

I have written about this film before. That is of course if you can really call it “a film.” But it was in movie theaters, and yes, based on the provocative movie poster, I snuck in to see it!

4D AWFUL!

I cannot recommend this film highly enough – because you will be stunned that I was suckered into seeing it!

“Psyched By The 4D Witch” is one of cinema’s greatest movie titles, but it’s not so much a “movie” as it is a series of poorly shot b-roll shots with an equally poorly written narration laid over it…and shots of this actress…

As you watch, you begin to notice things, like the fact there is NO synched sound at all, meaning it’s all b-roll and voiceover of her “thoughts and reactions”! And by the way, it is the worst voiceover narration ever recorded, with pointless scenes of her in a room looking like this….

By the way, there is NOTHING “adult” about this footage, which is followed by random footage of traffic and city streets – all strung together to fill time…in fact, it was described by Something Weird Video (who was smart enough to release it on DVD) as:

“the most maddening, jaw-dropping, mind-bending piece of celluloid lunacy ever to play American theaters!”

The film was Directed by Victor Luminera…it’s his only credit – EXCEPT he takes credit on “Psyched” for Director, Writer, Composer, Casting Director, Costume Designer AND Art Department!

You understand that is EXACTLY why I love the folks at Something Weird Video – because they saved this film!

Welcome to Times Square’s seediest period ever!

“Erotic, Sensual and Smoldering!”

Director Andy Milligan was a master of bad moviemaking….like these gems:

For “Fleshpot On 42ndSt.”, Milligan turned his cameras on the legendarily seedy streets of New York in the early 70’s…

The plot was simple: A street whore desperately seeks love and acceptance against the backdrop of the criminal element of early 1970s Times Square. What sort of “Criminal element?” Well, check out this bar scene and you’ll get an idea…

The film featured classic Milligan dialogue like this:

Cherry Lane: Didn’t your mother ever tell you that you shouldn’t go out with strange men?
Dusty Cole: Bob’s not strange. He’s dull.

Based on the clip I showed you, he sure is!

Of course, the pressures of Times Square can make relationships tough, as Dusty has to confide to Tony…

Dusty Cole: When I moved in with you, you said they’re be no trouble between us. You said we’d shack up together and that’s all. And I said I’d help out with the money as soon as I get a job. Don’t think I don’t apreciate what you’ve done for me, Tony. I do… but you get more then your fair share of ass. There isn’t one night where you don’t come home from that shithole where you work and wake me up in the middle of the night because you want a piece of ass. I do my part so get off my back!

And of course, how can you go wrong with conversations like this one:

Dusty Cole: How’s your mother?
Cherry Lane: She threw me out. I guess she got tired of me using all her hairspray.

Countdown to Halloween Continues With A Great Joke: “Knock! Knock!”

“Who’s There?” Horror! It’s the month where you NEVER answer your door at night – and here is a great example of why not…as one reviewer puts it:

“What we do have is a home invasion film for the social media generation that should make you think twice before offering warmth and shelter to a stranger on a dark and stormy night.”

Sounds like a great Halloween movie to me!

“Knock Knock!”

“The Green Inferno” Director Eli Roth strikes again with a sex-fueled thriller starring Keanu Reeves!

The plot is simple: a devoted husband and father is left home alone for the weekend – and two stranded young women unexpectedly knock on his door for help. Things quickly heat up, and all sorts of sexual shenanigans ensure!

Here is the trailer:

Dread Central awarded it a score of 4 out of 5, and were behind the line: “what we do have is a home invasion film for the social media generation (yes, it does feature social media in its plot) that should make you think twice before offering warmth and shelter to a stranger on a dark and stormy night.”

Dark and stormy night thrillers are exactly what you want this time of year!

“Knock Knock!” – Meet “Death Game”!

“Knock Knock” looks like a twisted, vicious little movie, but did you know that it’s based on a twisted, vicious little movie from the 1970’s?

Here’s a great fact: Eli Roth based his movie on a classic cult film called “Death Game”!

Colleen Camp and Sondra Locke are two of the producers of “Knock Knock”, and they starred in “Death Game” in 1977!

Sandra Locke of course starred in a number of Clint Eastwood film such as “Sudden Impact”, and I’d love to see the original “Death Game” as well!

As I said, Eli Roth is also the Director of the Amazon cannibal horror film “The Green Inferno”, which the Director shot on location!

It’s that time of year, when the most unpleasant people can pop out of your toilet! Need more proof?

It’s time to celebrate some of the best horror films around – so you can turn your Halloween into a celebration of bloody excess like this!

Takashi Miike’s films are among the most imaginative – and craziest – ever made! This film looks like it has a ton of action as well as style, and I can’t wait to see why THIS animal is in the film:

The US remake of “The Ring” with Naomi Watts was a good horror film, but to see some of the best japanese horror ever, you have to check out the original film – thanks to the Japanese, a whole new era of stylized horror was unveiled!

The “Ringu” horror series from the late 90’s can be found online and on demand, and they are beautifully made horror films…

Time To Head To Italy For A Good Scare!

Some of the most inventive thrillers ever made came from Italy, during a time when the “giallo” film was at its height – just in time for Halloween, welcome to the bloody world of the Italian sex shocker!

Let’s begin with a film that was so controversial it landed the Director in court, facing prison time! It’s all because of this:

“In the annals of the abnormal there is no more erotic nightmare than the strange lusts of a…

Lizard In A Woman’s Skin!”

One of the most legendary Italian sex shockers is also one of the most controversial! Here is the plot: Florinda Bolkan plays the daughter of a prominant English politician who keeps having recurring “nightmares” in which she makes love to a bisexual nympho who lives downstairs and conducts all-night LSD orgies!

That’s Right: ALL-NIGHT LSD ORGIES!

Anyone who has nightmares involving a bisexual nymph is just looking for trouble! FYI, the film was released in the US as “Schizoid”, which she certainly was! When the nocturnal wet dreams become murderous, the neighbor turns up dead, and Florinda is the main suspect. Did she actually commit the murder she dreamt about?

And Who Is This “Giallo?”

“Giallo” is a 20th-century Italian genre of literature and film. In Italy, the term denotes thrillers, typically of the crime fiction, mystery, and horror categories. “Giallo” refers to a style of murder mystery film which includes lots of horror, eroticism and sex! Here is what one of the books looks like:

As you can see, it’s a lurid “come-on” to the reader, or in this case, to the moviegoer…and “Lizard In A Woman’s Skin” is a perfect fit as well, as it’s a sex shocker with a title as lurid as the style of filmmaking…

The Master! Director Lucio Fulci!

The Director of the movie was Lucio Fulci, one of Italy’s great horror filmmakers.

Among his films was this classic of the genre:

The Director was such a master of shock that a judge threatened to throw him in jail!

One such shocking scene in “Lizard’s Skin” involves a room full of disemboweled dogs. Director Fulci was nearly sent to prison because it was believed that the dogs were real and Fulci had allowed animal cruelty on the film! Crew members had to testify in court that the “dogs” were indeed fake and no animals had ever been harmed. Special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi even presented the dog props in court to convince the jury. This was the first time that an effects artist had to testify in court that their work was fake!

There was a time when these films were shown in classic “grind houses”, where sexploitation movies were shown all day and night to a “less discerning” audience!

It all begins innocently enough: Christine and her sister Betty go to a castle for a weekend modeling assignment. But guess what? She’s been lured there as a virgin for induction into a witch’s coven!

Well, you can imagine how much nudity comes from this setup! It’s a classic horror setup: lured into a world of black magic…where do they get these ideas?

The Madness Of “Witchcraft ’70”!

Yes, “Witchcraft” is all around us, and there’s a movie that shows it all to you!
Here’s a lurid expose about witchcraft around the world – first, watch this over-the-top trailer!

“Witchcraft ’70” is a “hidden camera”-style report of satanic rites from around the world. The movie dares to expose the audience to devil worshipping, voodoo cults, the church of satan, black magic, naked exorcism and pagan rituals!

The film is filled with great narration like this:

“A ballad of the ’60’s said, ‘I left my heart in San Francisco’. Now in the ’70’s it is possible to leave one’s soul there as well.”

And it appears they left their clothes there too!

And just to spice things up, how about this narration from the film:

“The night air carries the stench of flames, sex and an acrid unnatural sweat.”

These films used a variety of footage from around the world to make their case that “Witchcraft” was everywhere – including your movie theater!

Time To Celebrate The Bloody Fun Of “Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers!”

Yes, the title should tell you how “tongue in bloody cheek” this film is, but that’s what makes it a classic! First, check out this vintage movie trailer – oh, be warned that it is full of sex, nudity and blood – everything that makes Halloween great!

Here is the film’s plot, courtesy of the great website “DVD Drive-in”:

“On the hunt for runaway Oxnard teenager Samantha, Los Angeles private detective Jack Chandler stumbles across an LAPD investigation into a series of chainsaw serial killings when thinks homicide detective Harrison’s “Cuisinart Queen” suspect – caught “making Chicken McNuggets with a chainsaw” – might be the missing girl!”

“Chicken McNuggets With A Chainsaw”!

First of all, bravo to the modern scream queen Linnea Quigley, who gives a terrific performance in the film! The late 80’s were a delirious time for low-budget filmmaking…from “Re-Animator” to “Chainsaw Hookers”, movies were trying to keep the spirit of the drive-in alive – just bloodier, sexier and with a knowing wink to the audience!

Director Fred Olen Ray had already directed a few movies prior to “HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS” – but according to DVD Drive-In, “Hookers” was filmed in five days!

Greg Kenner’s “MovieTime” Moment!

DVD Drive-In also reports there is a great “extra” on the blu-ray release: a vintage “MovieTime Hollywood Premiere” (3:53) in which later Oscar-nominated actor Greg Kinnear pays his dues condescendingly covering the film’s premiere interviewing Quigley, Wildsmith, Camp Video’s Jim Goff, Sybil Danning (who is “always interested in a seeing a good documentary”), and cabaret act “Les Stevens and the Lovely Carol”.

As one of the folks who worked at MovieTime in the day, this is a great piece of nostalgia!

Smile! It’s Halloween!

It’s my favorite time of year – when the scariest films of all time return to my TV screen! Everyone has a favorite horror film – you know, one that really scares you…and modern cinema has given us SO many incredible images to shake us up…

You get the idea – there are old classics and new favorites – all created to scare the hell out of you this Halloween season – I wanted to share some of my favorite horror films…and also highlight some lesser known films that deserve to be seen!

More on these incredible Twin Horror Directors in a moment, but first, we begin with what is, without question, the greatest horror film ever made – one that forced viewers to flee the theater because it was too much to watch!

Time To Celebrate “The Exorcist!”

I think this is the scariest film ever made…and without a doubt the greatest horror film of all.

Here is the original trailer, that only hinted at the intensity of this film:

In the more than forty years since it was released, “The Exorcist” has remained one of the most shocking films ever released….because of moments like this:

And of course, there is a scene that will never be forgotten – a scene that continues to shock an audience:

“Cue The Soup!”

The moment that little Regan unloads gallons of green liquid onto her guests is a legendary horror scene…but equally entertaining is the banter that the demon has with Fathere Damien:

Demon: What an excellent day for an exorcism.
Father Damien Karras: You would like that?
Demon: Intensely.
Father Damien Karras: But wouldn’t that drive you out of Regan?
Demon: It would bring us together.
Father Damien Karras: You and Regan?
Demon: You and us.

Great “Exorcist” Trivia!

Here is some great trivia about the film:

The refrigerated bedroom set was cooled with four air conditioners and temperatures would plunge to around 30 to 40 below zero. It was so cold that perspiration would freeze on some of the cast and crew. On one occasion the air was saturated with moisture resulting in a thin layer of snow falling on the set before the crew arrived for filming.

Oh yeah, and then there is the “head turn” sequence! As you can see in this picture, little Regan is holding a crucifix for all the wrong reasons…another scene that was so shocking that audience members fled the theaters when it was playing – this type of horror reaction just doesn’t happen any more!

This film is so intense and scary that the original teaser trailer, which consisted of nothing but images of the white-faced demon quickly flashing in and out of darkness, was banned in many theaters, as it was deemed “too frightening”.

And then of course, there is the projectile vomiting scene!

The substance that possessed Linda Blair hurls at Father Damien Karras is thick pea soup. Specifically, it’s Andersen’s brand pea soup. The crew tried Campbell’s but didn’t like the “effect.”

Of course, “The Exorcist” wasn’t the first movie to feature of child acting up…in fact, some evil begins before the baby is even born!

“Rosemary’s Baby!”

Mia Farrow’s performance as a young pregnant wife who feels something isn’t right with her new baby is the glue that holds this shocking classic together…

Time For Some Cult Camp Classics – With Cinema’s Reigning Cult “Scream Queen!”

I love Linnea Quigley! Her movies are some of the most entertaining cult movies of the 80’s!

Linnea Quigley is best known for an incredible run of 80’s horror films, and became America’s most legendary “Scream Queen!”

Her breakout role was in the 1981 slasher film, “Graduation Day”, followed by ” Savage Streets”, “Silent Night, Deadly Night” and “Nightmare Sisters”…where she always managed to stay very clean!

A Scream Queen “Legend” Is Born!

Quigley had a number of films to her name by the mid-80’s, making a name for herself and building up a loyal fan base. And then, it was time to “rock it” to the big time!

Linnea Shows Off Her Talent!

Yes, that’s a very naked Linnea Quigley dancing in a graveyard in the hit movie “The Return Of The Living Dead!”

In 1985, Quigley broke out big time with her sexy “dance with the dead” – she played teenage punk “Trash”!

“Return Of The Living Dead” made Quigley a star, but for me, 1988 was the year she became America’s “Scream Queen” forever!

In 1988, Quigley starred in the “perfect storm” of evil – three 80’s horror classics, beginning with a movie that screams 80’s excess – even in its title!

What makes this movie perfect is, of course, the title – not just for using the word “Slimeball”, but because it was originally known as “The Imp!”

Yes, the plot of this film is simple: sorority babes worship an Imp that grants deadly wishes. And it had this classic line:

“It’s too bad we had to kill her. I really liked the outfit she had on.”

Campy? Sure! A whole lot of fun to watch! Absolutely! Next up is another 80’s horror classic:

“Night Of The Demons!”

Talk about a film that completely captures the spirit of horror in the 80’s!

Once again, Quigley steals the film, which is a “kids go to party and die instead” setup, this time in an abandoned funeral parlor. Quigley’s imaginative use of lipstick, plus some well-placed nudity, was all it took for the film to be a huge hit!

According to IMDB, Linnea and special effects artist Steve Johnson met when she came in to get the mold for her fake breasts done! They were later married.

And finally, 1988 finished off with one of the wildest films she’d ever starred in!

“Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers!”

Another of the greatest movie titles of all time, and a really fun horror film that delivers lots of blood, gore and sex!
